Eskrima - Arnis - Kali
Eskrima, Arnis or Kali are all interchangeable terms used for the indigenous martial art of the Philippines, also sometimes referred to as Filipino Martial Arts, or FMA.
The art is unique in the way in which it focuses from day one on the use of a simple rattan stick. The concepts and principles learned can in time be applied to use and defend against bladed weapons, other blunt impact weapons, and empty hands.
Historically, the practice of indiginous tribal arts of the Philippines were forbidden by the Spanish during the colonial period, where the carrying of bladed weapons were prohibited. The native Filipinos continued to train, using a stick as a replacement for a blade, and sometimes disguising the art as folk dance. Over time, the art developed to incorporate historical European fencing techniques, and continues to evolve to this day.
